Abstract:

In recent years, veterinary practice in Australia has undergone significant evolution, marked by changing client expectations, advancements in educational standards, technological innovation and altered workforce dynamics. Central to this evolution are the roles of veterinary nurses (VNs) and technicians (VTs), whose contributions have become increasingly vital in delivering high-quality veterinary care and optimising practice efficiency. Challenges persist, however, in fully leveraging the capabilities of VNs and VTs within equine practice, particularly within the constraints of existing regulatory frameworks. This article explores the opportunities for increased utilisation of VNs and VTs in equine practice in Australia, summarising existing training pathways, the regulatory environment, and identifying opportunities for expanded roles. Maximising the potential of veterinary nurses and technicians can enhance the quality of equine veterinary care in Australia and sustainability of the workforce.
