Abstract:
Introduction: Coxofemoral luxation in adult, large breed horses is uncommonly reported in the veterinary literature and is associated with a poor outcome. Described treatment methods include closed reduction, open reduction, internal fixation and femoral head ostectomy.
Case study: A 7-year-old, Australian stockhorse with chronic grade 5/5 lameness of the right hind, that persisted despite resolution of upward fixation of the patella. Luxation of the coxofemoral joint was diagnosed with radiographic and ultrasonographic examination. The horse was subjected to humane euthanasia due to the poor prognosis and the diagnosis was confirmed at post mortem.
