Abstract: A series of abortions occurred in mares in NSW in 2004-05 that involved similar histories and changes on post-mortem examinations conducted on the foetus and placenta. Initial investigations involved testing for known diseases capable of causing abortions in mares, general toxicological assessment to look for exposures to a range of possible environmental toxins, detailed pathological and microbiological studies on samples from abortion cases, and an epidemiological study that involved collection of retrospective records from more than 50 broodmare farms from southern QLD to Victoria.
