Abstract: Whilst dairy cattle nutrition is a large subject in which it can take years to develop expertise, it is necessary for veterinarians dealing with cattle to be able to assess whether a diet seems reasonable, and it is wise to have an understanding about how farmers make the decision of what they might feed a dairy cow. This paper describes in simple terms how to assess the ration of a dairy cow, and discusses the broad concepts that can be used to determine whether the diet is obviously unsuitable and likely to be causing problems. It is not designed to provide instruction on how to formulate a ration from scratch.
