Abstract:
In that letter, the author referred to a paper by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), that was published in a peer-reviewed journal (Pharo and Cobb 2011). The paper was in preparation since 2009 before publication in April 2011. Coincidentally, the timing of publication coincided with a decision by the Director General of MAF relating to import health standards for pig meat. That decision is subject to a judicial review in the High Court of New Zealand, requested by the New Zealand Pork Industry Board (NZPIB), for which a judgment is still pending, at the time of writing. All submissions filed by the parties in the High Court are publicly available for anyone wishing to better inform themselves of the process and analysis supporting the MAF decision, the grounds of the NZPIB challenge, and the response by MAF. MAF does not intend to make any further comment until judgment is delivered.
