Abstract: During the spring of 1997, there has been a high prevalence of “bearings” (vaginal prolapse) on a number of farms in Southland. No doubt other regions of New Zealand have had similar problems. In an attempt to establish possible links to something that may trigger a “bearing”, other than ewe pregnancy status (single or twin bearing), blood and herbage samples were taken from two farms in the Gore area. Samples were taken from ewes which had recently developed a “bearing” and from ewes showing no sign of the condition. All ewes were carrying twins. We had no preconceived ideas of what to expect.
