The use of an anaesthetic combination in pigs

Abstract: The purpose of this communication is to inform veterinarians about an anaesthetic regimen which we hare found useful in pigs requiring short-term anaesthesia for minor procedures. We believe this communication is timely because, over recent years, there has been an increasing number of pigs kept as companion animals. The regimen involves the combination of xylazine hydrochloride and an agent containing equal parts (weight/weight) of tiletamine hydrochloride and zolazepam hydrochloride (Zoletil 100, Virbac Laboratories, France). Zoletil and xylazine hydrochloride are mixed in the same syringe and administered by deep intramuscular injection at dose rates of 4.0 mg/ kg and 2.2 mg/kg body weight respectively. The pigs are recumbent within 5 minutes and maximum anaesthetic depth is normally reached within 15 minutes. Induction and recovery are smooth and the pigs are usually standing within 60-120 minutes.
