Abstract: In October 1989, we received a blood sample from a horse which had recently aborted. The sample showed a very high titre against Leptospira interrogans serovar copenhageni and lower titres against several other tested serovars. Two in-contact horses showed high titres against serovar hardjo. The above findings prompted us to investigate the presence and frequency of Leptospira titres in New Zealand horses. In contrast with the extensive literature on leptospirosis in most production animals in New Zealand, there are thus far only a few references for horses. Three selections of serum samples were tested in the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). The samples were tested against the following serovars: copenhageni, pomona, hardjo, tarrasovi, ballum, canicola, bratislava and grippotyphosa
