Production responses of steers to growth promotant implants designed for heifers

Abstract: Growth promotant implants have been widely used in cattle for many years and there is little doubt that, providing nutritional conditions are adequate and that the treated cattle are qtill maturing, they give cost-beneficial responses to the owner. Several different formulations are commercially available, some of which are recommended for both steers and heifers (Ralgro - zeranol 36 mg) and some for steers only (Compudose 2001 and 4001oestradiol 17 beta 24 mg and 45 mg and Synovex H progesterone 200 mg/oestradiol benzoate 20 mg) or heifers only (Synovex H testosterone proprionate 200 mg/oestradiol benzoate 20 mg). We wish to report a series of trials in New Zealand in which testosterone propriqnate 200 mg/oestradiol benzoate 20 mg (Hefarex), which is normally used in `heifers, and progesterone 200 mg/oestradiol benzoate 20 mg (Steerex), which is normally used in steers, were compared as growth promotant implants in steers.
