More pelt defects in lambs

Abstract: In a letter to this journal in October 1987 Alley et al. described dermatophilosis as a cause of pelt defects in lambs. The illustration reminded me of an outbreak of dermatitis in Canterbury sheep in 1984 that was caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and was first detected at a meat works. In April 1984 the Lincoln Animal Health Laboratory received some pelts from a Christchurch meat works. They showed 3-20 mm diameter holes distributed mainly along the back. When examined microscopically a 2 mm wide zone of necrotic tissue was present on the edges of the holes. Many lambs from a line of 212 were reported to have had the lesions and six were condemned because of their severity. The farm of origin was located at Rakaia, 50 km south of Christchurch.
