Isolation of anthelmintic resistant Ancylostoma caninum

Abstract: Anthelmintic resistance in various nematodes of sheep, cattle, goats and horses has been documented worldwide but to date no cases have been reported in dogs. A nine week old greyhound bitch in poor condition was recently imported from Rockhampton, Australia. The bitch was treated with 100mg pyrantel pamoate and 380 mg oxantel pamoate/7kg* before entry as required by the import regulations. Over the next three weeks the faeces remained loose and there was no improvement in body condition in spite of the bitch having a good appetite. The bitch was presented to a local veterinarian for routine vaccination and retreated with Canex-plus. One week later with still no clinical improvement a faecal sample was submitted to the laboratory for a nematode egg count and bacterial culture. Salmonella havana and Campylobacter jejuni were cultured and the sample was found to contain 30,000 strongylate nematode eggs per gram (e.p.g.).
