Abstract: I am confused. In Appendix 1 of the new Guide to Professional Conduct for Veterinarians in New Zealand I am informed that The performance of surgical procedures for purely cosmetic purposes is deprecated and is totally unacceptable. Amongst operations normally classified as being done purely for cosmetic purposes are ear cropping and tail docking of dogs. By common definition (Concise Oxford Dictionary) deprecate means disapproval of, etc. Totally unacceptable means completely intolerable. Which of these definitions most truly reflects the code`s intent? Does the intent imply unethical conduct? Do we as a profession at last have the courage to stand up and be counted!
