Abstract: Thank you for the opportunity to reply to Iris Scott's letter, which I have read with interest. I certainly applaud her concern for conservation, and readily acknowledge the points that she makes about current systems of farming being economical in terms of environmental impact. However, my letter referred to past practices, not current ones, and she herself says that "high country management now practised has been greatly altered from past methods". That said, I am delighted that Iris Scott took the trouble to reply with such a thought-provoking letter. As a former editor of this Journal I know just how provocative a writer has to be in order to get any reaction whatsoever, and obviously my skill at that has not been lost!
