Abstract: As a result of a number of queries put to me recently from members of the profession I would like to clarify the legal and ethical situation as regards the docking of horses` tails. Under the terms of the Animals Protection Act 1960, it is illegal for this operation to be carried out by other than a qualified veterinary surgeon. From an ethical standpoint, the performance of this operation, for other than valid therapeutic reasons, is unacceptable. Any veterinary surgeon who is found to have carried out such a procedure would be required to defend an allegation of professional misconduct. I trust this letter will serve to give notice to members of the profession of the ethical requirement relating to this procedure.
