Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The following is an outline of a scheme to accredit goat flocks (or herds, as applicable) as free from the viral infection Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE). This CAE flock accreditation scheme has been designed
jointly by the New Zealand Goat Council (representing the industry) and the Animal Health Division (AHD), of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), in consultation with the New Zealand Veterinary Association. For those flock owners who choose to enter the scheme and abide by the rules, accreditation will impart an officially recognised status facilitating national and international trade. The scheme is entirely voluntary and the accreditation register will be maintained by the AHD. Animal Health Division has no legal sanction to enforce any aspect of the scheme.
The only means by which compliance may be ensured is for theDivision to retain the right to withdraw accreditation immediately divisional officers have reason to suspect that any breach of the rules of the scheme has occurred.
