Prevention of ryegrass staggers

Abstract: We recently obtained some interesting results in significantly reducing ryegrass staggers (RGS) in young Friesian calves by preventative drenching with Nutrimol (liquid seaweed animal health aid). RGS this last season was very prevalent in North Canterbury, as it was in other parts of New Zealand. Farmers were experiencing costs of $2000-$4000 (made up of deaths, increased surveillance, feeding of special crops and grain and reduced management flexibility). The trial with Nutrimol was not set up to look at the effect on RGS, but rather one of an ongoing series looking at different animal inputs over the January-March periods to improve growth in young animals…
