Abstract: I am concerned about the validity of the Complement Fixation Test (C.F.T.) for Brucella ovis in rams. Over the past two years, I have advocated and been involved with B. ovis eradication in ram flocks in mid-Canterbury. I have used the procedure as set out by the Sheep and Beef Cattle Society of the N.Z.V.A., and have taken special care to ensure that the blood samples reach the laboratory within 24 hours, and the semen samples reach the laboratory within 2 hours, all in a chilled condition. I have culled any ram with a paIpable lesion of the testicle prior to bleeding, and have worked mostly in the winter/spring period when the rams should have been sexually quiet. By outlining my investigation on three farms, I want to show the reasons for my concern about C.F.T. for B. ovis
