Abstract: In response to the letter concerning cleft palate in pups from my colleague Tim Barraud, I too routinely examine the mouth of all newborn pups for congenital defects. My experience over many years and thousands of pups, unfortunately not statistically recorded, is that this has always been a common defect and is particularly prevalent in certain small breeds. The incidence has remained constant over a period of time, extending back in my case to the purely arecoline dosing era: although from that time until the present day I have exempted pregnant bitches, or warned owners not to allow dosing during pregnancy…
