Abstract: It appears that the public and veterinarians in Great Britain have rejected the concept of farming stags for velvet production mainly on ethical and moral grounds. The situation in New Zealand is very different where the industry is well under way. It has appealed to farmers and investors because of the high returns for velvet, the favourable taxation regulations, and the availability of finance from traditional lending sources. Premium grade velvet has maintained a high price of approximately $200 per kilogram for two seasons, and many stags will crop several kilograms of velvet each year…
