Abstract: I was very interested to see the letter from Mr Sheriff concerning Epertythrozoon ovis infection (N.Z. vet. J.26: 315). While I would agree with him that there is evidence of incomplete antibody involvement in the red cell destruction that characterises E. ovis infection, it does not necessarily follow that all the destruction occurs extravascularly. In many cases of autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, haemoglobinuria has been reported, presumably due to increased fragility of the red cells resulting in their intravascular lysis
