Abstract: In a recent paper entitled The Applied and Economic Aspects of Oestrus Synchronization in Cattle, Smith and Macmillan refer to management problems associated with suckling beef cows and the variable incidence of post-partum anoestrum, which limits the use of oestrus synchronization in this class of animal. They describe a technique using a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID). Despite the extended calving period in the average beef herd and the variable interval to the first post-partum heat, satisfactory results have been obtained using a single treatment of cloprostenol in selected suckling beef cows. Full details of three relevant trials are in preparation, but a summary at this time will illustrate the potential usefulness of this programme
