Abstract: Encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus is a rodent enterovirus which may affect young pigs causing a fatal myocarditis. This virus has not previously been isolated in New Zealand, although clinical and pathological evidence of an EMC-like condition in pigs has been seen at least once previously (Ruakura Animal Health Laboratory 1973 unpublished data).
