Abstract: Canine herpesvirus infections have been reported from many countries following the initial report by Carmichael et al. (1965) on the identification of the virus as a cause of disease in neonatal puppies. The neonatal disease has been well reviewed by Cornwell and Wright (1969). In adult dogs, the virus has been associated with respiratory disease (Karpas et al., 1968) and genital disease (Poste and King, 1971). In New Zealand, herpesvirus infection of newborn puppies has been suspected to be present for several years on clinical and pathological grounds, but the isolation of the virus has not been reported. We now wish to report the isolation of a canine herpesvirus from a puppy which was from a litter of six which died younger than nine days old
