Abstract: It has been the policy of this laboratory to request that blood samples for inorganic phosphate analysis be collected in potassium oxalate-sodium fluoride anticoagulant but the origin of this recommendation is obscure. The recommendation is presumed to be based on the premise that fluoride ion inhibits a wide range of enzymes that hydrolyse phosphate esters and release phosphate ions.
