An undiagnosed colic in a racing stable

Abstract: A racing stable in the Waikato district accommodates some 20 horses, 10 in work and the others being broken in or spelled. Horses have been run on this land for the last 5 years and the present owner has been there for 10 months. During the last 3 months there have been 9 cases of colic on the property; 7 were acute cases and one was fatal. The 9 cases involved 7 horses, as 2 of them were attended twice within 3 months. Without exception the colic is sudden in onset. Six cases have been attended at night between 2 and 6 hours after the evening meal. In all cases the meal in the feed bin has been eaten completely or nearly so. The affected animals showed varying degrees of pain
