Abstract:
Haemonchus contortus is a significant parasite of sheep in New Zealand, causing loss of production and mortality. This case describes a six-month-old ewe lamb diagnosed with severe Haemonchosis. Treatment of this case included iron supplementation, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, an anthelmintic, and a blood transfusion. Two weeks after initial treatment the patient developed gastrointestinal and neurological signs and was euthanised. The additional therapies were able to be utilised due to the strong human animal bond between the lamb and lifestyle block owner. Within this there is also discussions around how better vet – lifestyle client relationships and education can lead to better outcomes for animals.
