Abstract:

A two-year-old golden retriever was presented for examination with a two-week history of abdominal distension, lethargy, and poor appetite. Results of serum biochemistry and fasted bile acid stimulation test were consistent with chronic hepatic insufficiency. Computed tomography identified a markedly small, nodular liver, ascites and multiple small extrahepatic portosystemic shunts. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the liver were suggestive of a ductal plate malformation, leading to portal hypertension and liver dysfunction. The malformation was different to those previously reported in dogs. It is considered likely that phenotypes of hepatic ductal plate malformations exist that have not yet been well defined. Ductal plate malformations should be suspected in young dogs presenting with signs of liver 'failure' and/or portal hypertension with ascites.
