Abstract: Salmonella is a common infectious pathogen of livestock and an important zoonotic disease. The emergence of multidrug resistant Salmonella serovars over the last several decades has also contributed to global concerns regarding the potential for antimicrobial use in agriculture to pose a risk to human health. Outcome determinants of host pathogen interactions include host immunity, challenge dose, and pathogen virulence. Environmental conditions and farm management have the potential to influence these determinants and subsequently the risk of morbidity and mortality. Variation in host immunity across the livestock production cycle is in part predictable providing an opportunity for farm management to implement strategies to mitigate disease risk. Similarly, the growth characteristics of Salmonella are well documented providing an opportunity for farm management to implement strategies to reduce the risk of overwhelming pathogen challenge.
