Abstract: Domestic cattle are not a particularly fertile species, so it is rarely possible to increase per cycle conception rates to much more than 50 - 60%. The main limitation to fertility is the ability of embryos to survive early gestation, rather than of a failure of fertilization. Hence, the management of breeding cattle is primarily concerned with preventing further loss of potential fertility and maximising conception. Thus, management of fertility in domestic cattle is, in reality, management to minimise infertility. In this context, the sound mating management of bulls can be an important factor in reducing the risk of male infertility.
