Abstract: Release of the Equivac® HeV Hendra virus vaccine for horses to the Australian horse owning community represented the first commercially available product focused on mitigating the impact of a Biosafety Level 4 pathogen. The strategy of immunizing and protecting horses against HeV for provision of a substantial health benefit to humans has always been a part of the vaccine story. But the vaccine also encapsulates the spirit of a One-Health approach with respect to environmental health, as its successful deployment should help to deflect any momentum towards the setting of control policies with potential adverse environmental impact, such as elimination of flying fox populations.
